So it’s nearly Christmas and like every year I struggle with presents’ ideas for my family! In this post, I’m going to talk about the special that I made for my mum.
the idea
Mum has always been a huge fan of Queen so I started thinking about something related to that.
Originally I thought about buying her a cinema ticket for the Bohemian Rhapsody film which has been released recently but she’d already seen it so I had this idea of making a bespoke photo for her. I was inspired by the Bohemian and Rhapsody cover and I tried to replace Queen with me, my husband and my 2 boys. I thought it would be cute! So I set up the camera on a tripod, a black background, I held a continuous light coming from the top and I took the shots of the 4 of us.
I didn’t like it. It was just too serious and boring. I took some more attempts but then the kids started complaining and I left it there.
The next day I tried again, but I’ve decided that I only wanted my kids in the frame and then I would merge the individual frames in Photoshop. I was unsuccessful. AGAIN! The camera was on the tripod and I was holding the light but the focus was slightly off the subjects and I wasn’t happy. I tried again promising the boys pocket money and sweets but it did not work. Disappointed I left it again.
The shot
In the evening I gave it another go, making sure the setting was spot on, same distance, and I preset the focus making sure my boys didn’t move from where they posed.
I used a Halloween wig to make it fun and super quickly I took the shots: 2 per child and with a little effort, I made it! I then layered the 4 shots in photoshop and below you can see the outcome. My mum hasn’t seen it yet, I hope she likes it!
One thing that I’ve learned with my job is that persistence wins! In anything, never give up. Try, try and try again. Eventually, something will come up.
I’m not generally a studio photographer but I do like playing with studio lights now and then.
